Class Information

Class Teacher: Mrs Westron

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Lambert

I am so pleased to welcome you back to school after such a strange and turbulent time and I can't wait to begin our journey in Year 1 filled with learning, rich experiences, laughter and fun.

In the first few weeks, I look forward to the children sharing their All About Me bags which they received before the Summer Holidays, so here is a little bit about me...

I began my teaching career in Berkshire, before moving to Altrincham and then in 2007 I began at Witton Church Walk initially in Year 4 and since then I have taught in Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3/4. Thirteen years seems to have flown by as every day is still a fun and exciting challenge and I absolutely LOVE working here, with the staff, children, parents and carers, church and community.

My favourite subjects are phonics, reading and writing and I can't wait to read you the stories and books I have in my very full cupboard and ever growing Amazon shopping basket!

Outside of school I am kept very busy with my three children who are 6, 5 and 5 and we can mostly be found at the park, swimming and dance lessons, getting messy with art, crafts and baking, on long walks or watching far too many Disney DVDs!

I can't wait to learn all about you and have an amazing year together.

Twitter

As you are aware, many protocols have changed throughout school, including limited face-to-face contact. Please do not hesitate to email or phone regarding any worries or queries you have – however big or small. You may not be able to have a ‘quick’ chat on the playground any longer but we are here and will endeavour to keep communication and our partnership between home and school strong. I am also contactable via Twitter (if you have small queries.)

...so please follow us on twitter for regular updates, reminders and celebrations of the children's achievements!

Important Information

Change Reading Books: Friday - Please ensure your child's book bag, reading record and reading books are in school every day

This year staff will not be writing in children's reading records but we will be keeping our own records and using Bug Club to track frequency of reading.

Please aim to read 5 times a week as your child's reading experience is much more than the reading book which comes home from school. Reading is happening all the time in a classroom and in the school. It is taught in phonics, specific reading and English lessons, but children are practising and using their 'reading' constantly across all subjects too.

Parents can support this 'reading journey' through regular reading at home. Reading to and with your child every evening for at least ten minutes can make a dramatic difference to a child's achievement within school. A report from the Oxford University Press highlighted the importance of parents reading with their children. 'Children who read outside of class are 13 times more likely to read above the expected level for their age'.

The report also offers six tips for reading with your child at home, including:

1. Make time to read- even ten minutes a day

2. Choose different types of books

3. Take turns to read

4. Talk about the book- asking your child questions

5. Pay attention to the language

6. Enjoy reading

Autumn Term

When the children return the focus of our learning will be our R – Curriculum which is centred around reconnecting, recapturing, recuperating, reviving and resuming.

In September, our R-Curriculum will put the children’s wellbeing and transition back to school at the heart of our activities and learning. We will be investing time to build relationships once again with staff and peers, listening to children’s experiences, being transparent about the steps we need to take to transition back to school, relearning the skills required to learn in school and developing the confidence needed to thrive.

We will also be giving our children the space and time to rediscover themselves and give them a voice and the opportunity to be heard and the support to understand their own emotions about the changes that have occurred and their return to school.

This R Curriculum will run alongside completing the Early Learning Goals due to the missed learning in the Spring and Summer Term of Reception.
